Become a Ten Chimneys Docent: Registration Now Open for Training Courses

November 10, 2011

If you’ve ever considered becoming a volunteer docent at Ten Chimneys, a wonderful opportunity to get involved is approaching. We are currently registering prospective docents for training courses to begin this winter, in preparation for the 2012 tour season.

Because our docents do not employ a script, there is freedom and flexibility to be creative in the moment during each tour and customize presentations for specific audiences. In order to give both guests and docents the best possible experience, docents receive comprehensive training over a period of 14 weeks (approximately 2 hours per week). Although there is much to learn, we strive to provide training that allows docents to add their own interpretive flair and grace to their tour, to help guests feel as if the Lunts invited them personally.

Throughout the year, Ten Chimneys docents are also invited to attend volunteer meetings, continuing education sessions, and a much-anticipated Volunteer Picnic on the grounds of Ten Chimneys each summer. In addition to a rewarding and revered role as a docent, our volunteers find inspiration, personal growth, and a community of eclectic friends.

Two Docent Training Courses will be offered:

Session 1: Thursdays, 10am — 12pm
Feb. 16th — April 19th: Weekly classes
April 26th — May 17th: Individualized sessions with Docent mentors

Session 2: Tuesdays, 6pm — 8pm
Feb. 21st — April 24th: Weekly classes
May 1st — May 22nd: Individualized sessions with Docent mentors

Can’t make either of these times? Please drop us an email or give us a call to let us know you’re interested. We’ll appreciate your thoughts as we schedule classes in the future.

Need CEUs? This year, docents who complete training and fulfill certain requirements can earn 2.8 Continuing Education Units through an exciting new partnership with UW-Waukesha.

To sign up for a Docent Training Course, or to discuss any aspect of Ten Chimneys’ Volunteer Docent Program, please don’t hesitate to contact Volunteer Manager Alyssa Tsagong at (262) 968-4161, ext. 212 or atsagong@tenchimeys.org.
