Fellowship Program Quote of the Day: July 13th

July 13, 2009

Ten Chimneys welcomes Ms. Lynn Redgrave as the Master Teacher for the 2009 Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program.

In the words of Ms. Redgrave on her return to Ten Chimneys…

“In 1976 I spent a memorable day visiting the Lunts at Ten Chimneys. After a delicious lunch, cooked by Alfred, I sat with Lynn Fontanne, for whom I was named, in the living room. I asked why there was no memorabilia on display. “Oh, would you be interested? Alfred! Bring me the Lear”. A few minutes later Alfred Lunt came back carrying a small copy of Shakespeare’s King Lear. Lynn explained that when she was 16 years old, she had been the protege of the great Ellen Terry. She showed me “the Lear” and talked me through Miss Terry’s hand written notes about playing the role of Cordelia. My heart stopped. I was touching history. 33 years have passed since that magical day and I can’t wait to return to Ten Chimneys this summer. Together with the 10 inaugural fellows, we will dream and risk and grow in a safe environment. Sharing stories and experiences, working on Shakespeare, (with a little Noel Coward thrown in for good measure) holding hands with the long line of actors who have gone before us, touching history.”
