Jon Hudson Odom is an award-winning actor whose work across theatre, television, and film reflects a deep commitment to bold storytelling, transformative collaboration, and the development of new American work. A company member with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and an Artistic Affiliate with American Blues Theater and Olney Theatre Center, Odom has built a career championing daring, socially resonant plays at many of the country’s leading regional theaters.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Odom has appeared at acclaimed institutions including Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Writers Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, Round House Theatre, and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. His stage credits include No Man’s Land, Describe the Night, The Seagull, and Ms. Blakk For President at Steppenwolf; Toni Stone at Goodman Theatre, earning a Jeff Award nomination; Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at Denver Center, which garnered a Henry Award nomination; and Angels in America at Round House Theatre and Olney Theatre Center, which earned a Helen Hayes Nomination.
Passionate about developing and championing new work, Odom has originated roles in numerous world premieres, including Shipwreck, Botticelli in the Fire, and Ain’t No Mo at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company; Ms. Blakk For President at Steppenwolf Theatre Company; The Magic Play at Actors Theatre of Louisville and Olney Theatre Center; Witch at Writers Theatre; Things With Friends and The Reclamation of Madison Hemmings at American Blues Theater—which earned a Jeff Award Nomination; and Colossal at Olney Theatre Center. His work consistently amplifies stories that challenge convention while expanding representation and theatrical form.
Odom is a seven-time Helen Hayes Award nominee and recipient, a two-time Jeff Award nominee, and a Henry Award nominee. His honors include a Helen Hayes Award win for Passion Play (Pontius), with additional nominations for Metamorphoses (Midas), Ain’t No Mo (Peaches), Angels in America (Belize), and Botticelli in the Fire (Botticelli). He also received a Best Ensemble nomination for Colossal at Olney Theatre Center and Metamorphoses at Folger Shakespeare.
Critics have praised Odom’s magnetic stage presence and versatility. In a review of An Octoroon at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, DC Theatre Scene described his work as a “tour-de-force performance,” noting that “Odom is in command from beginning to end.”
On screen, Odom appeared as Sammy on HBO’s Emmy-nominated Lovecraft Country, part of the series’ celebrated ensemble during its 18 Emmy-nomination run, and Michael in the Peabody Award-winning HBO series Somebody Somewhere. Additional television credits include South Side, Chicago P.D., and 9-1-1: Nashville. His film work includes The Year Between, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, A Savage Nature, and Reporting for Christmas.
